'Pineapple diplomacy'

New Zealand and Taiwan work on their trade connection

A consignment of 500 pineapples from Taiwan was received in Auckland, New Zealand, marking a significant development in trade relations between the two regions. This event underscored the commencement of a celebrated phase for Taiwanese, stemming from the liberalization of trade agreements. New Zealand's consent to import Taiwanese pineapples under a decade-old free trade deal symbolizes a new market opportunity for Taiwanese fruit growers amidst economic challenges posed by China's opposition.

Labour MP Ingrid Leary highlighted the critical nature of pineapple exports for a group of villagers on Taiwan's west coast, emphasizing the existential stakes involved. The visit by New Zealand MPs to Taiwan aimed to strengthen inter-parliamentary connections, despite New Zealand's non-recognition of Taiwan as a sovereign state. The delegation's efforts were warmly received by Taiwanese officials, with the pineapple trade deal being a focal point of discussions. Despite pineapples not being a major export for Taiwan, the fruit's symbolism and China's import ban in 2021 underscored the geopolitical tensions between China and Taiwan.

The backdrop of these developments includes China's continued military exercises around Taiwan and the complex diplomatic landscape New Zealand navigates in maintaining economic ties with Taiwan while adhering to China's "one China policy".
