Demand for export-quality Karnataka mangoes on the rise

Despite an increase in mango prices, the demand for Karnataka mangoes, both for domestic consumption and international markets, continues to grow. Among the most popular varieties are Alphanso, Badami, Mallika, Banganapali, and the GI tagged Kari Ishad from Ankola. The Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Limited (KSMDMCL) and the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) reported that in the fiscal year 2023-24, Karnataka exported 596.23 tons of mangoes valued at Rs 168.9 million (2.05 million USD) from April to December.

This is a significant increase from the previous years, with 245 tons exported in 2022-23 and 222.9 tons in 2021-22. Karnataka ranks as the second-largest mango exporting state in India after Maharashtra. The state's success in maintaining this position is attributed to the quality and loyalty towards its mangoes, facilitated by air cargo logistics. Additionally, Karnataka mangoes are transported internationally from ports in Kochi, Chennai, and Mumbai. Between April and July 2023, 685 tons of mangoes were exported via air cargo to the USA, Kuwait, and the UAE, with significant quantities sent to major international airports in Fort Worth, Washington Dulles, San Francisco, Kuwait, and Dubai.
