Dominican Republic wants to increase mango exports by up to 30% this year

In 2023, the Dominican Republic had an outstanding mango production, which allowed it to export 32 million kilograms of mangoes. The Dominican Mango Cluster (Promango) forecasts exports will increase by up to 30% this year, reaching 3 million boxes of 4 kilograms.

Even though the oversupply of mango in the international market affected last year's export goals, producers have good expectations for this year. The Minister of Agriculture, Limber Cruz, said these "extraordinary" results reflected the care and technical assistance provided to fruit growers.

The efforts are focused on increasing exports to the United States, the second largest buyer of Dominican mango after the European Union, which accounts for 47% of international fruit sales. "The Dominican Republic continues to demonstrate the strength of its production and food security," Cruz said.

The Dominican Republic currently has 8,991 hectares planted with mangoes, 5,899 of which are in production, employing nearly 1,900 producers. Keit is the main export variety, followed by Mingolo mango and other varieties such as banilejas and crema de oro.

In addition, authorities announced that the Expo Mango 2024, the most relevant event for the region's fruit growers, will be held at BanĂ's City Hall square. This fair, coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture and 25 other institutions, will include tastings, talks on production, and technical assistance days. Rafael Leger, president of the Dominican Mango Cluster, described the event as "a celebration of mango and the Dominican fruit growing sector."
