Melinda's initiatives regarding logistic innovation do not stop. This time, they are focusing on transport systems that can guarantee shelf life despite the prolonged transit times via sea caused by the problems on the Suez canal.

A chilled container equipped with Controlled Atmosphere made available by Hapag-Lloyd upon request of DCS Tarmaco - the logistic company that took care of the shipping - was in fact used by the Denno warehouse (Tenno) to ship 22 tons of Red Delicious apples to India.
The container left from Genoa headed to the Cape of Good Hope. It should arrive in Nhava Sheva around June 20th.
Used to help manage the temperature correctly, controlled atmosphere (CA) can significantly contribute to prolonging the shelf-life and maintaining the high-quality and condition of many perishable products during transport.
CA implies relative humidity, temperature, reduced oxygen (O2) and increased carbon dioxide (CO2) to obtain a composition around the product unlike normal air.
Melinda technicians will compare the quality of the produce arriving in India with that of other shipments made using traditional container reefers. If the better quality is confirmed, this technology may be used on a larger scale during the next season should the Red Sea crisis continue, forcing ships on longer routes to reach the Middle and Far East.
