The supply of leafy greens in Pune has been affected due to high temperatures, leading to a reduction in availability and an increase in prices in both wholesale and retail markets. Vendors are experiencing spoilage of produce like lettuce, spinach, and spring onions, attributing this to the heat, and have adjusted prices upwards.
Umesh Shinde, a local vegetable store owner, noted a rise in the purchase price of coriander, while Mahendra Kalbhor, head of the vegetable section at Market Yard, confirmed that the supply of greens like coriander and spinach has decreased due to higher temperatures and water scarcity, pushing prices up. The supply of coriander and spinach at APMC Pune has notably dropped compared to last year and the average supply, with wholesale vendors reporting spoilage during transportation, necessitating price increases. Customers have also observed higher prices and reduced quality in online purchases. This situation mirrors a trend from the previous December, where prices for leafy vegetables surged due to supply shortages.
