"Despite problems on the Red Sea, demand has increased for several weeks"

The issues in the Red Sea have resulted in fewer shipments of apples going from Poland to Egypt and India, says Aleksandra Pawlica, responsible for sales of Polish apple exporter Refal: "The situation in the world is changing very dynamically and it is difficult to predict anything, this is the same when it comes to the Polish apple season. Due to the problems in the Red Sea, in recent months we have observed a decline in the number of apple shipments to Egypt and India, which are among the most important markets for us. Fortunately, Refal sells apples to various countries and despite the problems on the Red Sea, demand has increased for several weeks and we have a lot of orders. We hope that this situation will continue until the end of the season."

Although interest for certain varieties might fluctuate, Pawlica was surprised to see the fall of the demand for one specific apple. "The varieties that are currently selling well are primarily Gala, Red Cap and Red Delicious. On the Polish domestic market, successful varieties are Red Jonaprince, Ligol and Champion. We're very surprised by the low demand for Golden Delicious. However, based on experience from previous years, we know that interest in varieties may change at any time. Prices of dessert apples have remained stable for several months; in recent weeks we have even seen a slight price increase."

"We are always looking for alternative sales markets. We send apples to Romania, Hungary and Greece. Moreover, due to problems in the Red Sea, apples sometimes take a very long time to be transported to our distant contractors, which is why we care even more about the quality and proper protection of the shipped apples. We try to think optimistically and hope for calm, systematic sales until the end of the season," Pawlica concludes.
