South African apples and pears in the Indian market

South African apples and pears are gaining traction in India through retail supermarkets and e-commerce platforms, presenting a new challenge to Kashmir apples. The introduction of South African fruit into the Indian market aligns with three significant developments. Firstly, a recent agreement between India and South Africa has facilitated the in-transit sterilisation of these fruits, reducing delivery times and ensuring fresher produce upon arrival.

Secondly, at Fresh Produce India, held on 21-22 March, South Africa's Fresh Produce Exporters' Forum advocated for the adoption of South African apples and pears, particularly the full-red Gala variety.

Thirdly, changes in shipping routes have accelerated the trade of South African commodities. While it is too early to determine the impact on Kashmir apple prices, a promotional campaign in the Hindustan Times has underscored the health benefits and superior growing conditions of South African apples and pears.
