Surging cabbage prices in Australia shock consumers

Consumers across Australia have expressed their astonishment on social media platforms regarding the significant increase in cabbage prices at major supermarkets and independent retailers. Discussions on Reddit highlighted the unexpected cost, with reports from the Gold Coast of a half head of cabbage being sold for $13.

Another individual noted a small whole cabbage priced at $9.90 at Woolworths, while Coles listed whole wombok cabbages and mini varieties at $9.90 and $7.90 respectively. This price hike has sparked comments on cabbage traditionally being an affordable vegetable, with some humorously remarking on its newfound luxury status.

Both Woolworths and Coles have acknowledged the price surge, attributing it to a supply shortage caused by adverse weather conditions affecting cabbage production areas. A Woolworths spokesperson cited "excessive heat and rainfall" as the primary reasons for the current scarcity, a sentiment echoed by a Coles representative who mentioned the impact of "challenging climate conditions" across multiple Australian states.
