Exploring avocado and macadamia cultivation in Yunnan, China

In southwest China's Yunnan Province, the cultivation of avocados and Australian macadamia nuts is contributing to local prosperity. Avocado farming in Menglian county began in 2007, and by 2023, the planting area had expanded significantly, replacing 15 percent of the imported share. Nuodong village, an early adopter, has seen substantial benefits from the establishment of a farmers' cooperative and the construction of modern irrigation facilities and an industrial ecological park. These developments have led to a projected fresh fruit yield of 17,300 tonnes for the 2023-2024 harvest season.

Australian macadamia nuts were introduced to Yunnan in the 1990s, with Lincang city pioneering their cultivation. By 2023, Yunnan had become the world's largest planting region for these nuts, thanks to government support, the leadership of major nut companies, and farmer participation. Lincang alone accounts for 40 percent of the global planting area. The industry has diversified into producing nut paste, oil, honey, and pastry, enhancing the value chain and contributing to a comprehensive output value of 5.94 billion yuan in 2023.
