Partnership leads to iceless broccoli innovation

Verdant™ Technologies has partnered with Freshouse, a grower and distributor of fresh produce, to launch an iceless broccoli shipping solution using HarvestHold Fresh® technology.

Traditional shipping methods for broccoli can use up to 3,500 gallons of ice per truckload to help maintain freshness. By using HarvestHold Fresh technology, the need for ice is eliminated, contributing to environmental conservation by reducing the number of total truckloads needed and enhancing workplace safety by reducing the risk of slips and falls when ice melts during transit.

At the same time, HarvestHold Fresh ensures that broccoli remains greener, crisper, and fresher for significantly longer periods. Real-world applications of the product have proven that broccoli shipped without ice can retain its vibrant green hue and freshness for three weeks or more, outperforming traditional ice-packed methods.

Through the partnership, Freshouse plans to offer iceless broccoli to its retailer network in 2024.

"We believe that this application is a giant leap in the right direction for the broccoli supply chain on the East Coast," said Jamey Friedman, president of Freshouse. "Our partnership with Verdant will play a pivotal role in our commitment to delivering broccoli that is not only high quality but also transported in an environmentally responsible manner."

"We're excited to see Freshouse reinforce its position as a leader in sustainable produce distribution with HarvestHold Fresh," added Paul Oklesh, director of sales at Verdant Technologies. "This technology signifies progress in environmental stewardship and ensures that consumers enjoy high quality, fresh broccoli."

Through the partnership, Freshouse plans to offer iceless broccoli to its retailer network in 2024.
