MSC wants to increase role in supporting East Africa's fresh produce sector

At Fruit Logistica Berlin, container shipping and logistics entity MSC displayed its commitment to bolstering the fresh product sector, encompassing fruits, vegetables, and flowers. This industry plays a vital role in East Africa's economy, contributing significantly to the Agricultural GDP of the East African Community (EAC) and offering extensive employment opportunities. The EAC, with exports valued at $1.1 billion USD in 2022 for edible vegetables, aims to enhance its export value to $900 million within the next eight years through increased fruit production and intra-EAC trade. The trade of fruits and vegetables with the EU, worth about $455.9 million annually, along with a rise in exports to the EU, the UK, and Asia, positions the EAC as a key player in the global fresh produce market.

With a growing demand for avocados in Europe and India, the port of Mombasa has become a crucial export hub, with avocados expected to become the second-most traded tropical fruit by 2030. This growth in avocado production in Kenya and Tanzania underscores the need for MSC's efficient logistics services. The shift towards sustainable transportation methods among EU buyers is reflected in MSC's reefer volumes, which have seen a 5-10% annual increase. Paul Bletterman, MSC Kenya's Regional Reefer Senior Manager and Business Development, emphasized MSC's commitment to expanding in the India and Middle East markets, showcasing its dedication to providing reliable and efficient shipping solutions.
