Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has announced plans for infrastructure enhancements across several ports, including the Port of Cape Town (PoCT), Mossel Bay, and Saldanha, in response to the increasing demands of the shipping industry. The PoCT, in particular, aims to address recent logistic delays that have impacted the fruit industry and other sectors, with a comprehensive strategy to expand and upgrade facilities.
Key initiatives include the Phase 2B expansion of the Cape Town Container Terminal, which is set to increase capacity from one million to 1.4 million TEU. This project, valued at approximately R1.775 billion, encompasses the enhancement of rail infrastructure, container stacks, and the introduction of a truck staging area and automation systems. "The design work will be completed by December 2024... Project commencement is planned for September 2025," TNPA stated.
Furthermore, TNPA is progressing with the Culemborg Intermodal Logistics Precinct Development, aiming to bolster back-of-port capacity through the development of nearby land parcels. This initiative is scheduled to enter the proposal request stage in the 2024/25 financial year.
