Drewry’s World Container Index decreased by 2% this week

Drewry's World Container Index decreased by 2% to $3,659 per 40ft container this week.

The composite index decreased by 2% to $3,659 per 40ft container this week and has increased by 93% when compared with the same week last year.

The latest Drewry WCI composite index of $3,659 per 40ft container is 158% more than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rates of $1,420. The average composite index for the year-to-date is $3,561 per 40ft container, which is $869 higher than the 10-year average rate of $2,692 (which was inflated by the exceptional 2020-22 Covid period).


Freight rates on Rotterdam to Shanghai decreased by 5% or $48 to $910 per 40ft box. Likewise, rates from Shanghai to Genoa and New York dropped by 3% to $5,042 and $5,976 per feu respectively. Followed by rates on Shanghai to Rotterdam which declined by 2% or $67 to $4,221 per 40ft container. Similarly, rates on Shanghai to Los Angeles fell by 1% or $71 to $4,683 per feu. Conversely, rates on Rotterdam to New York increased by 1% or $31 to $2,204 per 40ft box. While rates on Los Angeles to Shanghai and New York to Rotterdam remained stable. Drewry expects rates to remain stable next week.
