17 percent decrease from 2022 numbers

2023 Iranian pistachio exports to Europe saw a decline

In 2023, Iran's pistachio exports to the European Union members tallied up to €92 million, marking a 17 percent decrease from the €111 million recorded in 2022, as per Eurostat. This year, Iran stood as Europe's second-largest pistachio supplier, trailing behind the U.S. The breakdown of exports includes €65 million in pistachio nuts and €27 million in shelled pistachios, with the latter witnessing a significant 37 percent drop in exports.

Germany emerged as the primary European destination for Iranian pistachios, importing €49 million worth, followed by Italy and Spain with €7.0 million and €5.0 million, respectively. Meanwhile, the U.S. led the chart by exporting €640 million worth of pistachios to Europe, despite a 15 percent decrease from the previous year. Turkey ranked third, with its pistachio exports to Europe falling 28 percent to €51 million. Iran's renowned "green gold" faces production challenges, primarily due to water scarcity exacerbated by climate change and severe drought, impacting the country's agricultural sector.
