Richard Strijbis, Tovano:

"Ramadan boosts date sales, but it's a big item year-round"

The upcoming Ramadan usually boosts demand for the date assortment at Tovano in the Netherlands. After all, each day of fasting is traditionally broken by splitting open a date. "But I don't bring in extra containers just for Ramadan," says Richard Strijbis

"The entire date category grows annually and enjoys consistent sales throughout the year. Dates are a significant product for us year-round. Branchettes - dates on the branch - sales are increasing too."

Tovano offers a wide range of dates, including Tunisian, Medjoul, and Mazafati dates, complemented by products like date paste and pieces and chocolate dates. "Dates are becoming increasingly popular in various cuisines," Richard explains.

"People are discovering new uses all the time. And the great thing is, we have something for everyone, thanks to our broad assortment. Medjoul dates remain unique, but our Tunisian date range offers a more economical option without compromising on quality."

"I think dates are sometimes underestimated. Try sourcing the right quality, size, and packaging from the right source. I've been in this business for about 30 years, but I only truly found the suppliers I was looking for 10 years ago. That's vital; otherwise, you're always dealing with certification and delivery issues," Richard concludes.
