US production for 26 estimated vegetable and melon crops totaled 758 million cwt in 2023

In 2023, US production for the 26 estimated vegetable and melon crops totaled 758 million cwt, up 6 percent from 2022. In terms of total production, the three largest crops were tomatoes, onions, and sweet corn, which combined accounted for 54 percent of the all vegetables total. The value of utilized production for 2023 vegetable crops was $19.5 billion, up less than 1 percent from the previous year. Tomatoes, romaine lettuce, and carrots claimed the highest values, accounting for 34 percent of the utilized value of production when combined.

Key findings for the Southern Region from the Vegetables 2023 Summary
Florida: Tomato production in 2023 totaled 897 million pounds, up 8 percent from 2022. The value of utilized production for tomatoes, at $494 million, was up 39 percent from last year. Sweet corn production in 2023 totaled 588 million pounds, up 6 percent from 2022.

The value of utilized production for sweet corn, at $253 million, was up 15 percent from last year. Georgia: Onion production in 2023 totaled 232 million pounds, down 15 percent from 2022. The value of utilized production for onions, at $159 million, was down 7 percent from last year.

Sweet corn production in 2023 totaled 389 million pounds, up 30 percent from 2022. The value of utilized production for sweet corn, at $169 million, was up 59 percent from last year. South Carolina: Watermelon production in 2023 totaled 101 million pounds, down 35 percent from 2022. The value of utilized production for watermelons, at $17.0 million, was down 40 percent from last year.
