The New Year in Japan is celebrated with a range of unique lucky bags, but until recently, there was a noticeable absence of fruit-themed bags. This changed with the introduction of the Crown Melon Lucky Bag. The Crown Melon, dubbed as "The Japanese King of Fruits", is a renowned variety of muskmelon grown in the western region of Shizuoka Prefecture.
In Japan, high-quality fruits are often luxurious and costly gifts. It's not unusual for the most sought-after varieties to cost more than 10,000 yen ($68) per piece. As melon enthusiasts, we opted to buy a Crown Melon lucky bag from Melon Shop Maeshima, a Shizuoka-based melon specialty store with over three decades of experience. The bag, priced at 9,999 yen on Rakuten Japan, contained over ten seasonal fruits, including the coveted Crown Melon and Mikkabi mikan citrus fruits.
Instructions were also provided to determine the optimal ripeness of the melon, which would be ready to eat about three days post-delivery. We also discovered interesting melon facts, like the fact that they don't ripen faster in the refrigerator and should be eaten when there's no moisture left on the vine.
The melon came with a sparkly sticker featuring a crown symbol, a testament to its outstanding quality, having been meticulously grown and inspected. The sticker also carried the producer number, allowing us to trace the individual who cultivated it. This particular producer takes such pride in their work that they even display their producer number on their car license plate!
