A celebration of Tasmanian blueberries with Fruit Growers Tasmania

Fruit Growers Tasmania, in alliance with Independent Grocery Stores (IGA) Tasmania, is heralding the prime season for Tasmanian blueberries. Beginning today (16 January), a four-week campaign will promote the consumption of these berries during family summer festivities and as a snack for the upcoming school term.

The Tasmanian blueberry season spans from late December to May, with the zenith typically from mid-January to February's end. This season's blueberries are notably plump, sweet, and juicy, thriving in Tasmania’s cool temperate climate. The slow, lengthy growing season results in a bold, enduring flavour.

A promotional video celebrating the blueberries has been released online on the Fruit Growers Tasmania and Tasmanian Grown websites, funded by the Tasmanian Government. The campaign also includes stories about passionate Tasmanian blueberry growers and festive lighting in Hobart city centre.

Peter Cornish, CEO of Fruit Growers Tasmania, extolled the virtues of Tasmanian blueberries and encouraged purchasing these berries to support local growers facing various challenges. IGA Tasmania, with over 80 stores across the state, will feature Tasmanian blueberries in all its outlets.

The Tasmanian blueberry sector has seen increased production over the past decade, with Tasmania being the second largest production state in Australia. The sector is exploring new markets for potential growth and greater exports.
