The Rimini-based Bernardi company:

Twenty acres of greenhouses for the cultivation of vegetables and melons

The first 6 hectares, out of a total of 20, of greenhouses that will allow the Bernardi company to extend the season of melons and other vegetables in Romagna are being built. Christopher Bernardi, who supervises the daily work carried out in the field, explains how the project is being implemented.

"We bought a large piece of land between the sea and the main road a few years ago, adding to the 120 hectares we already had under cultivation. The beach is only 260 meters away from our property line. We noticed that melons and vegetables grow well here, thanks to the soil and climate. That's why we decided to invest in greenhouses to extend the melon harvest calendar. This will bring the production forward by about 40 days."

But melons aren't the only thing Bernardi grows. In the greenhouse, Bernardi will also be growing aubergines, cucumbers, and peppers as the main crops, with chicory, radishes, celery, and chard grown in rotation. "We want to grow as many references as possible," says Bernardi, "so we can be more precise and thorough in our planning."

Therefore, the availability of directly produced vegetables gives more certainty in terms of planning and supply. "The year is going to end with many references missing and very high prices. For what we do not produce directly, we have some important suppliers to compensate. With the help of our greenhouse crops, we will have more products and in periods that are usually not covered in Romagna."

"To put it another way," concludes Bernardi, "we are never at a standstill, but we continue to invest to meet the different needs of our Italian and European customers."
