High European demand for Israel’s carrots

The European demand for larger sized carrots from Israel is very high this season. Israel’s carrot season has about a month and a half to go before it ends. The Southern countries in Europe are starting to harvest their carrots, but they mainly have smaller sizes from the new crop. Amir Porat, CEO of Gezer Shluhot, who are one of the larger carrot growers and exporters from Israel, says they are happy to meet the unusually higher demand from Europe currently.

“2023 is a unique and high demand season, mainly from the European market. It was different than the year before. The European producers have now started to harvest mainly smaller carrots from this year’s younger crop with the demand for big carrots that still exist. For the medium sizes they will move from week to week more into the local European production. With the import focus in Europe mainly on big sizes, we in Israel will be ending in about four to six weeks’ time. Gezer Shluhot can supply good quality carrots until the end of the season. We will be the main exporter during the last few weeks, because we are situated in the Northern part of Israel, which makes us unique and is what we are known for. Producers in the South of Israel have finished harvesting. Over the next month as we in Israel end our carrot season, we will see that more and more local European carrots will be harvested,” explains Porat.

He is relieved that this season turned out to be fair after last year, which Porat describes as a bad season. “Over the next month or two we will see more and more local European production replacing the Israeli imported carrots. Gezer Shluhot will keep providing our end of season carrots, growing in heavy soils in the Northern part of Israel, with mainly big sizes showing a very good quality,” concluded Porat.
