Embrapa Cerrados (DF) has developed five genetically superior pitaya cultivars: BRS Lua do Cerrado; BRS Luz do Cerrado; BRS Granada do Cerrado; BRS Minipitaya do Cerrado and BRS Âmbar do Cerrado. These are the first pitaya cultivars that have been registered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa). Resistant to diseases , the new cultivars performed well in the orchards, even without the application of chemicals. This characteristic makes them suitable for organic cultivation, in addition to generating less environmental and financial impact on production. The fruits are very sweet, with a firm pulp and the plants are simple to handle, have good productivity and low production costs.
Cultivation of pitaya is still booming globally. Currently, Brazil is among the ten largest producers; at the top of production are Vietnam and China.
