The overall surface area devoted to watermelon plantation reached 18,667 hectares last year. The overall production value reached 3 billion yuan [446 million USD] last year. The overall surface area devoted to watermelon production in Dongtai reached 21,333 hectares this year, which further strengthened the position of Dongtai as one of the leading producers of watermelons and small watermelons. The watermelons will enter the market in April.
The market appearance of Dongtai watermelons was slightly delayed this year because of unfavorable weather conditions following the Chinese Spring Festival [February 5th, 2019]. Last year, the first watermelons entered the market in mid-April, but this year the estimate is late April. The watermelon variety 8424 is expected to enter the market in small volumes in late April, and only enter the market in bulk around May 5th. Other product varieties will enter the market after May 10th. The supply season of Dongtai watermelons lasts 3 months. There are a large number of product varieties, each with excellent flavor, and great feedback from watermelon traders throughout the country.
