The price for Chinese ginger was already quite low last Autumn when the new ginger arrived on the market. Growers chose to keep their stocks while waiting for a higher price. But, on the contrary, the ginger price continued to drop and by this April, it fell below 2 Yuan per kilogram. Now, the price dropped to 1 to 1.2 Yuan/kilo (0.13 euros), hitting the lowest record since the past 4 years.
Looking back to a few years ago, the high ginger price attracted growers to expand cultivation areas. Harvest volumes per hectare increased as well thanks to improvement in planting technologies. The increase in supply led to a price decrease. During the past one month, the price has fluctuated slightly, because supply from the South was hampered by rain. However, since then, ginger in stock from Northern regions has come to the market. As a consequence, the overall market supply will be adequate and the price will remain low in the following period.

It is also noted that the ginger export has increased a lot during the same period, which has slowed down the continuous price drop.
