Uzbek grapes reach Japanese supermarkets through export deal

Grapes from Uzbekistan's Ferghana region have reached Japanese supermarket shelves following the country's first successful commercial export.

In September 2025, private enterprise Sherakhun shipped a trial batch of grapes to Washin Trading Co., Ltd. in Japan. After evaluating the shipment, Japanese importers approved the quality and entered into an export contract valued at US$1 million.

Under the agreement, the first commercial delivery arrived in Tokyo on 28 September, consisting of one tonne of Kelin Barmok and Kora Kishmish grape varieties. Along with the grapes, samples of pomegranates and dates were also sent for evaluation.

Positive assessments from Japanese buyers on the fruit samples led to a new export agreement between Japan's Washin Trading and Uzbekistan's Quva-Agro Star LLC.

According to the latest arrangement, a shipment weighing 1,135 kilograms, including grapes, pomegranates, and dates, was exported to Tokyo. The new partnership expands market access for Uzbek fruit exporters and establishes Japan as a new destination for the country's fresh produce sector.
