“Total apple volume in Poland is estimated at 4.5 million tons”

The forecasts for the European apple harvest has recently been lowered, which could lead to opportunities for the Polish apple harvest. Thanks to great weather conditions, there will be double the quantities compared to Italy and France this season.

According to Jan Nowakowski, there will be a lot of good quality apples in the Polish orchards this year: “We’ll have good volume of apples this season, up to 10 per cent more apples compared to last year, and good quality fruits. With no frost in spring, a mild summer and only few hailstorms, we will have good crops to harvest. Total apple volume in Poland is estimated at 4.5 million tons, which is double the amount compared to France or Italy. We’re seeing larger volumes of Gala, Golden and Red Delicious varieties this season as well.”

As production is expected to be slightly lower than initially communicated, there could be a solid opportunity for Polish exporters to supply European markets with their apples. “All European countries will continue to buy apples as local as possible. Polish apples will be important to fulfil the volume needed for the demand from most countries in Europe. We will be exporting apples to Africa and Asia this season as well. European markets are still our main export destinations, followed by new overseas countries like Egypt, India, Vietnam or Bangladesh.”

Despite the fact everything is getting more expensive in the European markets, Nowakowski is certain there will always be a spot for apples on the table in the houses of European consumers. “The inflation is affecting all countries worldwide, even a country like Switzerland. It causes a weaker budget for average households, but apples are the main fruit to be consumed and especially to stay healthy, due to the Covid pandemic. I am pretty sure all apples will find their way to the consumers' tables.”
