UK: Almost 150,000 Asda workers forced to accept below average pay, says GMB union
Union GMB has claimed that Asda is forcing almost 150,000 retail workers to accept pay well below the industry average, at a time of soaring costs of living and food price increases. The union said the grocer had “imposed” a below-inflation pay increase of just 3.25% on workers, meaning they will earn just £9.66 per hour from April.

UK: Poundland moves into fresh food
Poundland is selling more fresh food in a bid to attract cash-strapped shoppers to do a weekly shop with the budget chain. It's opened its biggest ever store in Nottingham which has shelves of fruit, vegetables and bread. Poundland has been trialling fresh food in a handful of convenience stores but it's the 1st time the retailer has stocked these items in a main store. It plans to add the new ranges to more than 20 other large stores this year.

In stores all over the country, chat-friendly tills known as "blabla caisses" are being created, to allow customers to take a little more time to talk to staff. The idea behind the move is to recreate links between people, particularly after 2 years of the pandemic, that have left supermarkets concerned for the welfare of staff and shoppers alike. "We know we'll be welcomed, and people behind us know, so we're in less of a hurry. We don't get in the way", said a customer at a Carrefour store in the western city of Angers.

Mexico: A2Z's smart carts to be pilot tested in Chedraui location
A2Z Smart Technologies, Inc. is partnering with Mexico-based retailer Chedraui to pilot its Cust2Mate smart shopping carts at a flagship store in Mexico City. In the United States, Chedraui operates El Super stores in California, New Mexico and Nevada; parent company Grupo Chedraui Comercial’s U.S. subsidiary, Bodega Latina, acquired Smart & Final in 2021.

US: Uber's meal delivery bigger than rides
Uber Technologies posted better than expected results in the final quarter of 2021. The total turnover of the San Francisco-based company in the 4th quarter amounted to 5.78bln dollars (5bln euros), significantly exceeding analysts' expectations. Of this amount, 2.28bln dollars (2bln euros) came from passenger transport. For the 1st time in the company's history, the meal delivery business did even better, with sales of 2.42bln dollars. Cargo transport tripled its revenues to 1.1bln dollars (950mln euros), reports Belgian newspaper De Tijd.

Online grocer Misfits Market has unveiled its 1st-ever annual report, in which the company detailed its accomplishments over the past year. Canada: Walmart, PC Optimum crack Most Influential Brands top 10
Walmart retained its place among Canada’s top 10 most influential brands, while Loblaws continued its rapid rise up the rankings in the 11th annual Ipsos Most Influential Brands in Canada report. After pushing its way into the top 10 last year, Loblaw’s loyalty program PC Optimum also rose 1 spot in the rankings, taking over the number 9 position that had been occupied by Walmart (now No. 10) for 3 straight years. PC Optimum is the only Canadian brand to appear in the top 10, which, as in previous years, is dominated by global tech giants.
