The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) has started off the first joint task force between Brazil and the Republic of Guyana, with the objective of combating the pest Carambola fly (Bactrocera carambolae) in the border region between both countries.
Brazil is the third largest fruit producer in the world and the carambola fly is the main threat to the maintenance of export markets already established and in constant expansion of the fruit sector.
The joint actions are the result of articulations between the phytosanitary authorities of both countries and aim to reduce the population level of the pest in the state of Roraima, as one of the strategies to reduce the risks of its spread to the main fruit producing regions in Brazil .
