Banana prices to increase before Christmas

Alessandro Del Bello, whose company will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2020, reports that banana prices are progressively increasing due to a series of circumstances.

"The produce is lacking as it is hard to find in producer countries as well. As we are nearing Christmas, those who organize loads are giving more space to pineapples. What is more, transport costs are affecting prices per kg. I believe prices are set to increase by quite a lot already in early 2020."

The increase in transport costs will affect the entire exotic fruit sector, not just bananas. Dal Bello states that quality is good but, in order for the produce to reach consumers at its best, the best knowledge and technologies must be applied to guarantee the maximum quality.

"Bananas are not a commodity and I believe all operators need to understand it. We need to pay attention to what is put up for sale, especially when there are special-offers involved."

Dal Bello is now plastic-free. "We believe bananas come with their own natural packaging, so there is no need for plastic trays or films. The same goes for pineapples."
