Hort Innovation is conducting a new assessment of agrichemical requirements for the potato sector as part of its Strategic Agrichemical Review Process (SARP). The review identifies major pest, disease, and weed pressures for each crop, evaluates the crop-protection tools currently available, and notes regulatory risks linked to active ingredients under review. It also outlines potential alternatives where gaps exist.
The previous potato SARP was completed in 2017, and several widely used chemistries have since been withdrawn, including dacthal, diazinon, and chlorpyrifos. Additional active ingredient reviews are underway, and more chemistries have been added to the APVMA review program. With the regulatory landscape changing, updated input is being sought to ensure priorities reflect current production conditions and ongoing access to compliant crop-protection options.
Ausveg is gathering feedback from growers, agronomists, and industry stakeholders on present pest pressures and management needs in potato production. Responses will be used to guide the updated review so that on-farm challenges are accurately recorded and understood by organisations involved in registration, regulation, and research.
The revised SARP will help shape future efforts to maintain access to essential chemistry through product registration or minor-use permits, and to identify areas requiring alternative solutions. The reports form part of broader industry planning and are referenced by registrants, regulators, and research providers when considering development or investment pathways.
