Senegal's Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock (MASAE), through the Directorate of Horticulture, has received a container of seed potatoes at the Dakar Autonomous Port as part of preparations for the 2025–2026 horticultural campaign.
The initiative is connected to national agricultural policy under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, who have identified food sovereignty as a central objective for the sector.
For the upcoming campaign, MASAE reports that more than 20,000 tons of subsidized certified seeds have been secured. This includes 11,348 tons of imported seed, 7,000 tons of local seed, 1,000 tons of elite and super-elite seed, and 500,000 vitro plants for reproduction. The government has allocated over 7.3 billion FCFA (EUR 11.13 million or about USD 12.1 million) to support access to certified seeds at competitive prices.
MASAE stated that the budget dedicated to horticulture for 2025–2026 totals 130 billion FCFA (EUR 198 million or about USD 215 million). According to the Ministry, the allocation reflects political support for restructuring the horticultural sector.
As of November 7, MASAE reports that 94.3 per cent of invoices owed to seed potato suppliers have been paid with the support of the Ministry of Finance and Public Treasury. The Ministry also acknowledged the collaboration of the Director-General of the Dakar Autonomous Port, noting the port's international classification as the most efficient in Africa.
The Ministry said that under Minister Dr. Mabouba Diagne, preparations for the campaign are being carried out with a results-focused and transparent framework aimed at supporting modern and resilient agricultural production.
