Andhra Pradesh signs MoU with APM Terminals

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has outlined a plan to position Andhra Pradesh as a logistics hub for the eastern region of India. A key part of this plan is the development of marine infrastructure, including ports, fishing harbours, and fish landing centres at intervals of 50 kilometres along the state's 1,053 km coastline. The state currently has five operational non-major ports, with four greenfield ports expected to become operational by 2026.

As part of this initiative, the Government of Andhra Pradesh, through the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board (APMB), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with APM Terminals, part of the A.P. Moller–Maersk Group, to support port and terminal development in the state. The signing took place in the presence of the Chief Minister.

APM Terminals, active in India since 2004, operates Gujarat Pipavav Port Limited in Amreli District, Gujarat, and Gateway Terminals India at JNPA Port in Maharashtra. Under the MoU, APM Terminals has indicated its intent to invest US$1 billion (₹8–9 billion) in Andhra Pradesh for the modernization and development of ports and terminals. According to the agreement, the proposed projects are expected to create 8,000 to 10,000 direct and indirect jobs and stimulate industrial and logistics activity in the state.

The MoU focuses on establishing modern terminals, upgrading ports to international standards, and introducing energy-efficient and low-emission technologies. APM Terminals has also agreed to provide advisory support on project structures, port development mechanisms, and operational practices.

To oversee the implementation of the agreement, a joint working committee with representatives from APM Terminals and the APMB will be formed by the third quarter of 2025.

This development is part of Andhra Pradesh's broader strategy to expand its maritime network and reduce reliance on traditional sectors, while supporting coastal communities through infrastructure and trade growth.
