Potato Market Report 20th August

European potato demand remains weak amid oversupply

Demand is slow again this week, but there is hope that it will improve as schools will begin to return later this month, and weather conditions look more unsettled in the long-term forecast. Some early Rooster crop is slowly coming onto the market. Some growers still have supplies of good-quality old-season stock available, compounded by the fact that sales have been sluggish all summer. The peeling market is oversupplied, which is putting downward pressure on prices.

Across Europe, the situation in terms of supply has not improved. Supplies continue to exceed demand with little hope that the situation will change in the short term. Some factories are shut down for maintenance, while others are still clearing old crop contracts. Suppliers have been told that there will be no demand for free-buy, and some buyers have indicated that they may have difficulty honouring contracts. Rejections are on the rise, and growers are being warned that quality specs will be closely adhered to.
