Sassy apple launched into UK market, Miranda going very well in Asia

New Zealand grower and exporter Golden Bay Fruit launched the Sassy apple on the UK market this season and has had great feedback. "The Sassy is in the big retailers, including M&S premium range and Tesco under its own brand," said Patrick Meikle from the company. "This year we exported 60 containers, next year we hope to increase that to 100, which will go to both the European and Asian markets."

Another of Golden Bay Fruit's rising stars, Mirandaâ„¢, is a finalist in the 'Best Awards' for the brand refresh. "These are the most prestigious awards for design and branding in New Zealand, and brands from all industries can enter, not just food and beverage. Miranda is going very well in Asia; we have it in the biggest retailers in China, and the feedback has been great. It is a surprising apple; it is green but is very sweet, and it doesn't bruise easily, so it travels and stores well."

Golden Bay Fruit is planning to have 300-500 containers of Miranda out of New Zealand within seven years. They are also in discussions to expand planting to other countries.

"Both Sassy and Miranda appeal to the global markets. Volumes may have been down this season, but the quality has been outstanding. We have finished the export of Sassy, and Miranda will end soon. We have had so much demand for these apples that we haven't needed to store them as yet. We will continue to ship Pink Lady, one of our latest varieties, into November."
