Duisburg wholesale market:

"We have found a good niche in supplying events"

"We can't complain," says Frank Scholten, summarizing his company's current situation succinctly. The food wholesaler has been based at the local Duisburg wholesale market for many years and serves a broad customer base spanning the catering, hotel, and communal catering sectors. In parallel with its growing customer portfolio and delivery radius, the range of products on offer has also been significantly expanded over the years, as Scholten explained in an interview on site.

Starting out as a traditional wholesale business focusing on fruit and vegetables, the company has gradually developed into a full-service provider. Scholten: "Fruit and vegetables now account for only a quarter of our total sales, but remain virtually stable. We have observed that demand for fresh-cut products has grown strongly in recent years and are responding to these developments with appropriate product ranges, from peeled onions and fruit salads to high-quality convenience products. We also offer a wide selection of food products, such as dry goods, dairy products, delicatessen items, and much more, as well as non-food items such as a wide variety of packaging materials. In total, we can procure around 2,500 items overnight."

Like most of its wholesale market colleagues, Scholten now focuses almost exclusively on delivery. The delivery area of the growing company extends far beyond the borders of the Ruhr region. "We deliver throughout North Rhine-Westphalia, but also have customers in the surrounding federal states as far as Oldenburg and Leer. Our delivery area has grown considerably over the years. We have made a name for ourselves primarily in deliveries for events such as funfairs, Christmas markets, and the like, as well as for fairground operators. We have found a successful niche here." Thanks to space becoming available at the wholesale market, Scholten was able to expand its operating and storage space to around 1,000 m2. Further expansion of its premises is planned.

Wholesale market as a location with a future
Scholten points out that the company's growth is also due to its location, referring to the excellent location of the wholesale market. "We have perfect transport links here and can reach all our customers very easily from Duisburg. To continue growing, we need additional staff. After all, we have to be able to handle it all in practice," concludes the wholesaler, who currently employs around 35 people.
