FPEAK marks 50 years of exports

The Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya (FPEAK) marks five decades of advocacy in the horticulture sector. Established in 1975 by farmers aiming to enhance governmental engagement and market access, FPEAK has expanded from 36 to over 200 member companies exporting produce globally, including to the EU, UK, Asia, and America.

"We are celebrating 50 years of FPEAK's existence," noted CEO Hosea Machuki, reflecting on the association's formation to support growers and exporters. The sector now contributes around KSh 150 billion annually to Kenya's economy. Emphasizing collaboration with government and partners, Machuki stated, "We are always championing for a conducive environment in terms of the taxation regime, infrastructure development, opening of new markets, and support for small, medium, and micro enterprises."

FPEAK's evolution includes influencing industry standards. In previous decades, it played a role in developing standards for Kenyan produce. Currently, FPEAK participates in national committees like the Executive Committee of the Kenya Standard 1758 and more.

Facing challenges such as governance and logistics, FPEAK addresses these through professional partnerships with the government and international bodies. The strategic plan, ending in 2025, is under review with a focus on market diversification. "We are now actively looking at expanding into Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas," Machuki added.

FPEAK promotes sustainability among members, integrating economic, social, and environmental practices. "We are very keen to champion sustainability," Machuki stated. The association continues to uphold sustainability as a global competitive advantage.
