Furkan Karaca, Enjoy Trade Holland:

"Albanian watermelons gain popularity in Dutch and German markets"

At Enjoy Trade Holland in Venlo, the Albanian watermelon season has begun. "We've been in contact with these growers in Albania for some time, visited them a few times, and that led to this cooperation," says Furkan Karaca. "We're receiving good volumes, allowing us to supply both supermarket programmes and the free market."

Enjoy Trade Holland was established two years ago and operates a storage and transshipment facility at the Fresh Park site in Venlo. The company primarily offers a wide range of Turkish fresh produce, with vine tomatoes as the flagship item, alongside Dolma peppers and fruits such as figs, quinces, and pomegranates. "We mainly supply the Albanian watermelons to customers in Germany and the Netherlands," Furkan says.

According to the importer, Albanian watermelons are well-received by customers. "With this, we have a distinctive product in our portfolio, and price-wise, it is more attractive than Italian and Greek watermelons. That draws in a lot of retailers. We've received several truckloads over the past week and plan to scale up volumes in the coming period. The harvest in Albania will continue for at least another month and a half. In addition, we also offer Greek watermelons."

According to Furkan, the watermelons from Albania (Varela types) stand out for their sweet taste. "Today we also received a new variety that more closely resembles Spanish watermelons, with a light green skin and dark green stripes, but these are also wonderfully sweet in flavour."
