OP Granfrutta Zani (Italy) presents 'Viulèt'

A new, very sweet plum reaching up to 23° Brix

The campaign for Granfrutta Zani's Viulèt brand plums will start in a few weeks. "These are very sweet fruits with a Brix level of up to 23°, which will be available until the end of August," explains Italy Sales Manager Antonio Zani. There are three varieties. The first variety has black skin; the second variety has two-colored skin and ripens at an intermediate stage; the third variety has black skin and is of the European type."

"Last season, we harvested 80 tons. This year, we expect to harvest more than 250 tons. We have received excellent feedback from the chains that tried it in 2024. Additionally, we will introduce Viulèt under a new packaging design."

But first, it's Metis' turn. "We are starting to harvest plums under the Metis brand in southern Italy, and in about ten days, we will begin harvesting in Emilia-Romagna. These large plums will be available until November. Metis is an interspecific cross that combines the best qualities of plums and apricots. It is the result of a complex research program that we have been carrying out for years."

'"With regard to peaches and nectarines," Zani continues, "until now, the majority of the product has been sourced from the southern regions. On average, the fruit is one size smaller than in a standard year, but it is excellent from an organoleptic point of view. Those who produce high-quality work are often well compensated."

Conversely, the apricot industry has experienced a 35 percent decline in production. Production is lower than normal in both the north and south, and prices are often unsatisfactory. This is due to the drop in production. However, the forecast for the rest of the season is positive." Zani concludes, "Last week's rain and strong winds caused significant losses among the fruit ready for harvest."
