"We will finish picking and selling the asparagus in a week. This will bring an unusual year to a close. There was not enough supply, and we struggled to meet all the orders from other countries. In fact, there was a shortage of goods even during periods when we expected to be very busy. On the other hand, we had reasonably good prices, with quotations of €7–8/kg. Now, they are around €5.00–5.50/kg," says Claudio D'Alba, the CEO of Plantis Group. The company exports fruit and vegetables to Europe, particularly the Baltic and Scandinavian countries.

The Apulian manager has estimated a 30% shortage in the upcoming asparagus harvest, to which must be added the reduction in hectares allotted to asparagus cultivation. "Unlike in the past, it has not been possible to make long-term plans with customers. The fields were emptied earlier than expected. Therefore, there was no continuity in production, which can be attributed to abnormal weather conditions and frequent rainfall in previous months that affected the yield."
© Plantis Group Srl (main)The production trend for watermelons, melons, and other yellow fruits seems different. However, weather remains an important and unpredictable factor capable of changing the course of an entire season. For companies like ours that focus on exports, the beginning was slow, influenced by the arrival of competitive goods from overseas. These goods also had to contend with unfavorable weather conditions in Northern Europe, which hindered the consumption of summer fruits. The trade situation is improving, and the arrival of warm weather will help. We supply watermelons in various sizes. Larger pieces are preferred by other countries that have larger families and the need to buy competitively priced goods. On the other hand, Germans and Scandinavians prefer watermelons weighing between 2 and 3 kilograms.
