UK growers target Vietnam for premium apple exports

British Apples & Pears Limited (BAPL) has announced a major step forward in its export strategy with the approval of seed funding for an inward trade mission from Vietnam. The initiative forms part of BAPL's broader effort to explore new international markets for premium, larger-size British apples that fall outside UK supermarket specifications.

For several years, BAPL has operated a dedicated export grower group to assess opportunities for high-quality British apples abroad. This latest development comes on the back of a comprehensive export assessment by the UK's Department for Business and Trade (DBT), which identified Vietnam as offering the highest export potential. The DBT evaluated no cost to BAPL, providing a strong foundation for the Vietnam-focused trade mission.

"Larger apples are not always suitable for domestic specifications, but they are ideal for international consumers," said Ali Capper, executive chair of BAPL. "The export market we're targeting values premium, highly coloured, larger apples. But it's not just size—British-grown apples are renowned for their flavour, quality, and environmental credentials."

British apples benefit from a unique maritime climate, which allows them to ripen more slowly and develop a complex and distinctive flavour profile. Additionally, the UK's mild climate and optimal growing conditions contribute to a low water footprint, making British apple farming more sustainable. Furthermore, British growers widely adhere to rigorous standards such as Red Tractor and the LEAF Marque, which reflect environmentally responsible and sustainable production practices.

BAPL emphasized that the export initiative will not affect apple availability for UK consumers, who typically prefer smaller-sized apples. The aim is to secure profitable markets abroad for fruit that exceeds local size specifications, thereby improving returns for British growers.

"This is about ensuring every apple grown finds its best market," Capper added. "By expanding internationally, we're strengthening the entire industry and supporting the long-term future of British orchards."
