Agia farmers protest over lack of crop compensation

Farmers from Agia, Greece, organized a tractor protest on May 27 due to a lack of compensation for their 2024 cherry, chestnut, and apple crops. The protestors stressed that this year's early cherries have been severely affected by frost, with damage claims exceeding 70–80%.

The farmers stated, "We are being treated unfairly by the government and the Ministry of Rural Development, since we submitted the damage file for the affected crops as requested, and the damage exceeds 30% of the 2023 production. Cherries were supposed to be included in the 2023 compensation program, but that has not happened. We will not accept this injustice toward the producers."

Additionally, concerns were raised that Agia has faced exclusion from government programs on multiple occasions. As the representatives noted, "This is the second time Agia has suffered such injustice. The first was with Storm Daniel, when we were excluded and only later included, and now, once again, other areas with the same crops are being included while we are left out."
