"This year has seen significantly lower onion prices"

The availability of onions in India has been a lot better since the summer crop has been harvested, says Anil Katharani of Indian fresh produce exporter Kathrani Exports: "The summer crop of onions, which is a new onion harvest from Nashik and Poona in Maharashtra, India, is currently in full swing. With a bumper crop this year, prices are expected to remain stable. After several years of continuous shortages of onions, this year has seen significantly lower prices compared to earlier seasons, thanks to the abundant supply. Furthermore, the weather conditions have been generally favorable, and no major issues or shortages are expected to affect the onion crop this season at all."

The export of onions to one of Kathrani's main markets might become a bit more difficult, as the government of Malaysia implements certain haulage restrictions. "However, demand for Indian onions has slowed in key markets like Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and the Gulf region due to Pakistan's own bumper harvest and lower prices. Additionally, Indonesia's new import permits have yet to be issued, further impacting demand. Then there are the upcoming challenges in terms of logistics when it comes to the export to Malaysia. The Malaysian government is set to implement haulage restrictions for shipments ETA of 1st May 2025, limiting container loads to 25 metric tons. This move is likely to increase the demand for containers and drive up freight rates for shipments to Malaysia. As a result, exporters may face higher logistics costs," Katharani concludes.
