Russian fruit and berry self-sufficiency is hindered by import dumping

Russian efforts to achieve 60% domestic fruit and vegetable production are thwarted by import dumping, preventing the country from ensuring food security. Despite government support, only 47% of products on Russian shelves last year were of local origin, according to Deputy Minister of Agriculture Andrey Razin, speaking at a roundtable in the Federation Council on December 12.

Sergey Mitin, the First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Agricultural and Food Policy, commented on the situation, noting that self-sufficiency remains below the threshold of the food security doctrine. Imports continue to dominate, making it challenging to sell local fruit and berry products during the peak harvest period. Over the past five years, the production cost of fruits increased by about 60%, while the selling price only rose by 30%.

Andrey Razin emphasized the need for an additional 52,000 hectares of new perennial plantations to increase the overall fruit and berry harvest to 2.2 million tons.
