According to Jacob Aktalan of MG Fruit in the Netherlands, melon demand is not too wild. "Last month's extremely high prices affected sales, and several retailers have since removed melons from their assortments."
"Sales are quite steady, but that's only due to the occasional delays. Yellow melons, which are in good demand, are the positive exception," continues the importer. He does not expect a significant surge towards the holidays. "The Christmas rush of old is a thing of the past. Only special melons like the Charentais could see a potential increase in demand."
"Galia and Cantaloupe melons are priced between €6 and €7. Watermelons sell for €0.70 and €0.80. Charentais melons go for between €10 and €12, and yellow melons for €14 to €15," Jacob lists.
He certainly sees opportunities for melon sales in the winter. "Melons are a year-round product, as long as production is regulated. We depend on what's planted worldwide."
