Bert Westera, Sweet Fruits:

"Tight mango availability means the large sizes sell well, too"

This mango season is characterized by lower availability. "The Spanish Osteen season, with lower volumes than other years, is almost over. These mangoes should be on the market for another two weeks," says Bert Westera of Sweet Fruits' Dutch sales office.

"The trees in our Brazilian orchards are also producing fewer kilos and lots of very large fruit. These things make for an excellent mango market. There's a noticeable shortage of sizes 8, 9, 10, and 12. But since there's so little fruit, even the larger sizes are selling well. We're delighted with the current quality. Our investments in the packing facility and cold chain are paying off."

"We started with Keitt earlier than last year and will still have some of these in stock when our first Kent mangoes arrive in Rotterdam in late October. We offer Kent until the end of December. That season should be good because Peru is later this year and probably has fewer mangoes. We're very much looking forward to our first flown-in Kent, which we expect in mid-October," Bert concludes.
