Polish apple season looks positive after a period of drought

The Polish apple growers are getting ready for the new season and so far, despite some weather challenges, everything has been looking good, says Mohamed Marawan, owner of Polish apple exporter Sarafruit: “At this point, the apples in our orchards are growing nicely, one could even say perfectly, without any problems. However, I’ve heard from others that some areas in Poland are dealing with some problems because of the weather. However, in general the current situation is acceptable for the growers.”

Although Polish growers are still increasing production by planting new trees, this growth seems to have slowed down in general, Marawan explains. “As everyone will know, the weather is really changing all over the world. It’s been very dry, without much rain, but after that period of drought everything has been fine. Many new orchards are also planting new trees, but not at the same level as they were a year ago. That said, people are changing the varieties at some orchards to Gala, Golden and Red Delicious. Gala and Red Delicious are being planted the most as these two varieties have been the best-selling varieties last season.”

The hot weather gave opportunities for pests to develop in some of the Polish apple orchards. However, thanks to persistence and good practice, the orchards of Sarafruit are pest free. “As a company, we haven’t had to deal with any major problems in regards to pests. However, some orchards are indeed developing some pest issues, which I think is mostly due to the hot weather we’ve had, which helps these pests develop. However we’ve fought them off as much as we could, which was challenging in itself, but in the end we celebrated victory and our orchard is pest-free,” Marawan concludes.
