Education has changed the way Brazil applies ethylene

Exactly 50 years ago, a new way of ethylene ripening was introduced through a system that continuously releases small amounts of ethylene during a 24-hour application period. “Our Easy-Ripe and Ethy-Gen II Concentrate are a safer and more effective way to apply ethylene compared to systems that release all their ethylene at once,” says Steve Page, VP & COO with Catalytic Generators. The company started out in the United States but has since expanded all over the world. “Our first endeavors outside of the US were in Canada, followed by Great Britain, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and South America.

Various commodities
In South America, Catalytic Generators has been working with a distributor in Brazil since 2018. “Ethylene was already being used in Brazil, but on a more limited basis,” says Steve Page with Catalytic Generators. Prior to their targeted efforts, the company had one customer in one state, ripening bananas only. Today, there are more than 30 customers in eight states, initiating the ripening of more than seven different commodities.

“We are supplying ethylene to clients who are ripening and degreening bananas, tomatoes, various citrus varieties as well as mangos, avocados, papayas, and some other tropical fruit items like passion fruit,” shared Guilherme Mello of Embol Mais. Brazil offers many opportunities for ethylene application as the country is the third largest grower of fruit in the world according to the FAO.

“While the banana ripeners always had a need for ethylene, Embol has done a great job visiting and educating their customers on the benefits of making ethylene a part of their ripening programs for other commodities,” commented Page. Through Embol’s teaching and trials, customers realized that they would be able to improve their uniformity and overall quality by applying ethylene to all their tropical fruits. Once a couple companies had success, their competitors took note and started including ethylene in their ripening programs as well,” Page shared.

As a result, Embol has delivered and installed over 120 generators since 2018. Most clients are fruit distributors who are located in many states of the country, including Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Distrito Federal, Goias, Pernambuco, Mata Grosso do Sul, and Espirito Santo.
