Every day, the Cologne wholesale market supplies about 3.6 million citizens of the city of Cologne and the Cologne-Bonn metropolitan region within a radius of about 100 km with (fresh) food from the region, Germany, Europe and overseas. The trading center is thus not only a sales market for regional producers, but also the main supplier to weekly markets, unaffiliated food retailers, restaurants, bulk buyers, canteens and many more.
"Together with the weekly markets in Cologne, the Cologne wholesale market is a component of the city of Cologne's public services. At the wholesale market, far more than 100 companies have their existence and more than 2,000 people have a job. At the wholesale market, the integration of people from abroad is lived," advocates the Interessengemeinschaft Kölner Großmarkt e.V.
The city of Cologne is the operator of the wholesale market. "However, the city administration sees this wholesale market only as an annoying nuisance and has left it to its own devices for decades. The consequences of this neglect are felt by the traders and entrepreneurs every day. The relocation of the wholesale market to Marsdorf, which was decided more than 15 years ago, has not been implemented by the city administration. In a "night and fog action", the parliamentary group alliance BÜNDNIS90/DIE GRÜNEN, CDU and VOLT reduced the areas set aside for the relocation of the wholesale market in Marsdorf to a fraction in December 2021. A sustainable operation is not possible there, especially since the parallel settlement of the 1. FC Köln in the immediate vicinity on the land once reserved for the wholesale market is in the offing. How is this coexistence supposed to work? The city administration has announced that it does not want to continue the operation of the wholesale market beyond December 31, 2025. The council of the city of Cologne has the responsibility!" one describes in a comment.

"We urgently need a decision (a) to extend the operating time of the wholesale market in Cologne-Raderberg until at least 2030, (b) a mandate to the city administration to provide for an alternative location and (c) an instruction to the city administration not to evade responsibility, but to continue to operate the wholesale market in the future as part of the provision of public services for the population together with the merchants. We call therefore all dealers and entrepreneurs, their co-workers and families and also the many suppliers and customers of the wholesale market as well as all friends of the wholesale market to a peaceful demonstration in the sense of the right of assembly embodied in the Basic Law before the city hall at the time of the last council meeting before the summer vacations."
