Indian market looks promising for Moldovan apples

Moldovan produce was presented during MacFrut in Italy. According to Iurie Fala of Moldova Fruct, the exhibition was much better than when he last visited: “The show was very good for us. It was surprising to me that we had such a successful event. I had experience with the fair in 2021, which was during Covid, so that wasn’t a great edition obviously. However, this year was much better. The organisers are getting a lot of exhibitors and buyers on the floor from India, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and European countries, so it was great to see and be there.”

The Moldovan apple season has been one with two faces, Fala explains. “This year’s apple season was how it was predicted. The season ‘22-‘23 had many crisis situations that overlapped each other. There was the electricity issues, as well as pricing issues. However, the second part of the season was a little bit more positive. Gala and Golden varieties performed well. The export to former Soviet countries saw quite a big share, despite the market share of other countries increasing. 86% of our exports actually went to countries from the former Soviet Union. And about 40.5% of the apples are sent to Russia itself. However, 14% of the apples now find their way to other markets, which is a lot more compared to ten years ago.”

Moldovan apple exporters have also set their eyes on markets overseas, as their market share in these countries is increasing, Fala says: “For the Middle-East we expect that we’ll make a lot of effort to consolidate our position there. We exported about 6.3 per cent of all our apples overseas. It was unexpected that we exported more than 6,000 tons to these markets.”

“There are still some logistical issues, as we can’t use the Port of Odesa due to the war in Ukraine. Therefore, we use the Port of Costanta in Romania. For the Indian market it’s actually a promising one and Moldova exporters will continue to explore this market in the coming season,” Fala concludes.
