"Europe has been key for the good results achieved by Peruvian avocado so far in 2023"

In the first months of the campaign, Peru exported 166,790 tons of avocado worth 308 million dollars, i.e. 32% more volume and 40% more value than in the same period of the previous campaign. The average price paid also increased by 7% over the same period in 2022, standing at 1.85 dollars per kilogram. This increase was driven by Europe, which has been key for the good results of the Peruvian avocado so far in 2023. Prices obtained in the European market increased by 18% to an average of 1.87 dollars per kilogram, despite the fact that Peruvian volumes also grew by more than 24%.

These results were possible because of the decrease in production and the small calibers obtained in the Spanish avocado campaign, which will end sooner than expected. In addition, South Africa has delayed shipping its largest volumes due to ripening issues. “This combination of factors generated an ideal transition between campaigns for Peruvian producers.”

Meanwhile, the volumes shipped to the North American market during this early stage decreased by almost 50%. According to Fresh Fruit, “This is due to an attempt to redirect shipments to a destination where the country can obtain better results, such as Europe.” However, the country is expected to make large shipments to the United States between May and July, when the Mexican campaign decreases and Peruvian volumes reach the highest peaks.

The volume exported to Asia during this first quarter of the year increased by more than 70%. The price fell by more than 15% due to the increase in stocks, but it still remains high on average.

Main destinations
So far in 2023, the main markets for Peruvian avocado were the Netherlands (36% share), Spain (22%), and China (15%).

Exports to the Netherlands amounted to 61,355 tons (+2%) worth $112 million (+24%). The average price of the Peruvian fruit was $1.83 per kilogram (+22%).

Shipments to Spain amounted to 36,467 tons (+72%) worth 68 million dollars (+102%). In this destination, the price of the Peruvian product stood at 1.87 dollars per kilogram (+17%).

Peru shipped 23,282 tons (+80%) worth 46 million dollars (+60%) to China. The price in this country was 1.96 dollars per kilogram (+11%).
