With over 370 thousand tons produced in 2021, Italy is the first artichoke producing Country in the world, with Puglia and Sicily together accounting for three quarters of national production. In Puglia, the turnover from the artichoke-growing sector is worth over 190 million euros, one of the "richest" in the regional fruit and vegetables industry, after that of table grapes and fennel.
The Event
In the light of these numbers, Puglia rightly hosts the "XI International Symposium on Artichoke, Cardoon, and their wild relatives", organized by Giancarlo Colelli and Antonio Elia of the University of Foggia, in collaboration with the International Society of Horticultural Science (ISHS), the largest scientific society dealing with fruit and vegetables.
The event will take place at the "Finocchiaro" Auditorium in Molfetta, Italy, from 18 to 21 April, with the patronage of the Italian Society of Horticulture Science, the City of Molfetta, and the Department of Agri-Food Resources of the Puglia Region.
Participants
During the four days of work, researchers coming mainly from the Mediterranean basin (Italy, Spain, Portugal), but also from South America and the United States, as well as from other European countries, will converge on Molfetta. On-line participation is also available.
Program
The most recent innovations in cultivation techniques, breeding, postharvest technology and minimally processing, and non-food use of species of the genus Cynara will be addressed. The event is organized in 6 oral sessions and 1 poster session, for a total of about 50 presentations. The program will be completed by a Round Table and two technical visits to as many artichoke-producing areas in the provinces of Foggia and Brindisi.
Molfetta
Molfetta, the beautiful city by the Adriatic sea, returns to host an international scientific event of the ISHS and confirms itself as a welcoming city and attentive to research and innovation in the fruit and vegetable sector, one of the key sectors of the city's economy. Mayor Tomaso Minervini brings greetings from the City at the opening of the works.
Puglia Region
One of the scientific sessions will be entirely dedicated to the results obtained within the ICARUS Project, funded by the Puglia Region (PSR Measure 16.2) and which sees the collaboration between scientific institutions and private companies. In addition, the Round Table on "Current scenarios and new perspectives for the artichoke market", scheduled for 20 April from 11:30 to 13:00, is organized in collaboration with the Agro-food Resources Department and will see the participation of stakeholders and experts in the sector, as well as the Regional Councilor Donato Pentassuglia.
